Most people know the Mara River for one thing — the chaos of the Great Wildebeest Migration. The thundering hooves, the crocodiles, the crossing.

The Mara begins its life quietly — rising from the Enapuiyapui swamp, deep in Kenya's Mau Forest. From there, it flows down through the Maasai Mara, feeding one of the world's most celebrated ecosystems and fuelling the Great Wildebeest Migration — one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. It continues into Lake Victoria, joins the River Nile, and travels north through Sudan and Egypt, where it has sustained civilisations for millennia.
